We examined many potential wall sections to create an extremely tight building envelope. Consequently, the house can be heated with very little energy. Some of the sustainable features of this house were:

  • Super-insulated walls
  • Passive solar
  • Geothermal heating
  • Heat recovery ventilator
  • Permeable paving
  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Sustainable landscaping
  • Advanced framing
  • Low-flow fixtures
  • Energy efficient lighting

george plesko 2012-02-13T18:18:13Z 2012-03-22T18:17:58Z Green Building / Sustainable Design tag:www.davidlkingarchitects.com,2012-02-13:4a0fb8fea1506a2c85da7b80db31352e/62b934b43fe1964d2dbbe70b5c503043 Residential buildings account for 22% of the total energy consumption and 74% of water usage in the country. Construction wastes make up 40% of the solid waste stream.

Sustainable design ideas are changing how architecture is practiced, and ‘Green buildings,’ can offer dramatic advantages over conventional projects;

  • They use less energy
  • They create less construction waste
  • They use less water
  • They are more comfortable, and have better air quality
  • They are not necessarily more expensive

LEED is ratings system begun by the US Green Building Council, which evaluates green buildings. The system was designed to transform building practices by demonstrating that green projects are safer, more durable and more comfortable. Each project must meet minimum criteria in several categories such as energy usage, water retention and indoor air quality. A LEED building can simply be certified, or can achieve silver, gold or platinum ratings, and the house we designed in Lexington, achieved a gold rating.

David L. King Architects is located at 36 Bromfield Street in downtown Boston. We design residential and institutional projects in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Maine.

Architecture thrives as a collective effort, which is bettered by diverse opinions, and we welcome the participation of all parties, the client, the builder and the craftsmen in each building project. Sustainability, (green architecture,) is also integral to our design approach, not only with respect to energy consumption, but to durability.

Throughout the design, we listen with great attention to the client’s objectives, and consider critically how they might best be resolved in an architectural solution. By working through this process, we create welcoming and gracious spaces, that are a pleasure to live and work in.
